Program
Students will enroll at Al-Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco. The university was founded in 1995 by King Hassan II as the first English university in Morocco. Al-Akhawayn creates an academic environment that combines Arab and Mediterranean culture with the academic rigor of an American research institution. Ifrane is 60 kilometers from the capital city of Fez and has many sights of its own as well, including, beautiful forests, mountains, lakes, and waterfalls. Additionally, there are two planned weekend trips. The first is to the Tafilalt area, which is the largest oasis in the Sahara desert. The second is to Marrakesh, a vibrant city that flaunts some of Morocco’s most beautiful architecture and sites.
Courses Offered
There are two tracks available: Track 1 is language courses only and students will receive 6-10 hours of credit upon completion. Track 2 is language and culture and students following this track receive 9-13 hours of credit. Language course placement is determined by a student’s score on a diagnostic test.
Track 1 students will enroll in two language courses, and track 2 students will enroll in two language courses and a North African studies course.
Accommodations
Students will reside in one of the university’s 16 residence halls. Meals at the residence hall cafeteria is included in the program cost. Students can fully immerse themselves in campus life, as there are many student clubs, sports, and organizations.
Eligibility
Students from any accredited U.S. college or university may apply. One semester of college-level Arabic is recommended. Minimum GPA requirement of 2.50 (exceptions may be granted after submission of a petition.)
